We have a fawn pulled within first day. 24 hours or less. I have tried everything I know to get it to take a bottle. Will swallow but not latch on and eat. It has had 1 to 1 1/2 ozs at a time. For the last 3 days. Have never had one go this long without getting started. Starting to worry! Any suggestions?

Lactated ringers, sub-cu, they need a fluid intake/absorbtion minimum of 1oz/pound of body weight every 24 hours for hydration and to prevent kidneys from crystallizing and shutting down. Make sure you warm the fluids up, or you will crash their body temperature.

Tube, as Virgil said, or just keep drenching for nutrition. Hydration is extremely important. Vitamin B can help stimulate appetite, too.

Try a different nipple. I use pritchaed nipples and had one that started good on them but then just stopped. Just like you say, takes it but won't suck. Would suck my arms. face, and ears crying but wouldn't do the nipple. Got a regular baby nipple at the store, made the hole a little bigger. Then, let her suck on my ear lobe and slipped her the regular nipple and whala. Away she went! Worth a try. Good luck.

No magic cure that I know of but here are a few things to consider.

As said Lactate ringers WARMED UP. Don't let her get dehydrated.

Switch nipples maybe.

Once you start the tube feedings you run the risk of making the throat sore which will lessen the chance of it drinking. Also they drink better when hungry. (Within reason)

Make sure it is a quite area. No distractions and nothing scary.

Try a dark area.

Maybe even try taking out where she can hear the grunting of an adult doe and this could trigger her. Best not to let her see the doe though.

Gently rub the throat while gently filling mouth with milk.

Things I am sure you may have all tried already but who knows.

Good luck.

After 9 years of fawn feeding, this year we have noticed more than ever before that sometimes the nipple makes the difference. I would try another one just to see.

We just got a new doe fawn yesterday who didnt get taken from mom till 5 days old. She will not take the bottle, but If i put some milk on a plate and stick it to her mouth she will drink it - is this OK or do we need to keep trying to get her to take to the bottle
